Do I have irregular periods if I miss one period?

A normal menstrual cycle can range anywhere from 21 to 35 days. Even if it varies slightly from cycle to cycle, your period is still considered regular. So, missing one period is definitely not something to be worried about.

Your periods may be considered irregular in the following cases:

  • Periods that occur fewer than 21 days apart or more than 35 days apart
  • Missing three or more periods in a row
  • Menstrual flow that is much heavier or lighter than usual
  • Periods that last longer than 7 days
  • The length of time between cycles varies by more than 9 days

Treatment of irregular periods

Irregular periods are treated based on their underlying cause. Medications are often the first treatment for irregular periods, and there is a range of medications that may be prescribed depending on your needs. These include:

  • Hormonal birth control is available in many forms and helps to regulate your cycle
  • Tranexamic acid is used to control heavy bleeding
  • Pain relievers to manage mild to moderate cramps
  • Hormone therapy to relieve symptoms in those who are about to enter menopause
  • Antibiotics if an infection is identified as the cause
  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists to treat uterine fibroids and control heavy bleeding

Additionally, lifestyle changes such as losing or gaining weight, changing your workout routine, and practicing stress management may also help your cycle return to normal.

In cases where a medical condition is identified as the cause of irregular periods, surgical treatment may be necessary. There are several procedures that can be performed depending on your condition, age, and other factors, such as if pregnancy is something you are planning for.

When should you see a gynaecologist?

Speak to your gynaecologist if you have any concerns about your menstrual cycle or if you see a change in your normal pattern of periods. Some symptoms to look out for include:

  • Pain during your period or between periods
  • Unusually heavy bleeding or passing large clots
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • A period lasting longer than 7 days
  • Periods that become very irregular after you’ve had regular menstrual cycles
  • Nausea or vomiting during your period
  • Fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, fainting, or dizziness that indicated toxic shock syndrome
